Warrior SpiritBe aware of your balance ...

The term "warrior" is somewhat archaic today, but not the vital skills and understandings they've discovered and developed. With proper guidance, your "warrior spirit" is accessible by you, right now, to manage the challenging situations you face everyday—at work, at school, at home—and on your Way.

The Warrior Spirit
Traditional warriors developed ethical, martial, and spiritual skills that served their community and fostered their personal quest for an expanded consciousness. Stories about these people—and their ways—attribute to them admirable qualities such as: impeccable character, ebullient spirit, and humility—to name a few.

These warrior qualities also exist in you, and with proper coaching and guidance, you can learn how to cultivate and apply this combination of learnable skills and concepts to develop your unique gifts for meeting the challenges you face—at work, at school, at home, and on you Way.

The Warrior Spirit In You
Life is filled with many challenges—personal, professional, and spiritual—and too often, describing them as battles is not an exaggeration. We find ourselves constantly fighting mental and emotional battles with ourselves and others. Knowing how to access your warrior spirit is especially important when you find yourself in the midst of battles you did not choose, and those that you did—either consciously, or unconsciously.

By coming to know and practice the  warrior's ways, you begin to develop compassion, and begin to feel more at ease. When you feel more at ease, others tend to feel more at ease around you, and as a result, you lessen the likelihood of conflicts—from other people, and you own nagging thoughts.

The Meditative Perspective
The meditative perspective is a way of looking at things from your "inside-out." This perspective gives you access to a powerful capacity for alertness and calmness that's part of your makeup, but typically not used.

Meditation is a process of turning your attention inward to listen to your subtle sense of knowing and feel the calmness associated with it. As you gradually become more familiar with it, you find that alertness and calmness begin to appear spontaneously wherever and whenever you need it—in relation to your dealings with other people, or with your " critic."

By developing a meditative perspective you can access your warrior spirit to dissipate fear, foster courage, and maintain your equilibrium when turmoil and confusion are about. The warrior spirit, accessed through your meditative perspective, helps you maintain your equilibrium when strong events are pushing you off balance.

The Martial Perspective
Some people love the feeling of freedom and are willing to stand their ground when necessary, and fight for what they believe in. This is the warrior spirit.

The warrior spirit is accessed through the martial perspective and is a complement of the meditative perspective. The meditative perspective activates your sense of calm and relaxedness. The martial perspective engages your attention to act decisively, focuses your intention, and musters whatever forces are available to you.

The martial perspective makes you self-supporting, and cultivates the empathy and fortitude that inspires and enables the warrior to serve others who need help. This is called the "heart of a warrior."

The Meditative Martial Arts
Meditative martial arts like Tai Chi, Aikido, and Pa Kua teach you how to be successful without having to be overly competitive. The movements and attitudes of the meditative martial arts naturally cultivate your meditative perspective—helping you to calm and balance your mind and body when challenging events are swirling around you, and you need to respond effectively.

These practices and perspectives that gave the traditional warrior the capacity to face life and death situations with a calm, alert, and focused body and mind are available for you to start using today—at work, at school, at home, and on your Way.

The Meditative Martial Arts in Action
Some examples of the meditative martial arts in action include:

  • Minding Your Business. Your demeanor expresses calmness, rootedness, and equanimity, which has the power to defuse negativity in the person, or thought, you're in conflict with. You speak your piece, are listened to, and are heard. You walk away unharmed, full of integrity, and positioned to problem-solve the central issue..

  • Verbal Tai Chi. You feel calm, alert, and balanced in your body, but the other person is emotionally out-of-control and attacking you verbally. You follow your meditative perspective inward and contact your warrior spirit. You stand your ground to deliver your message. If a negative response is projected, you step to the side and skillfully redirect the negativity until it's dissipated. You then suggest next steps for problem-solving the issue.

  • The Aikido Shuffle. You feel calm, alert, and balanced in your body, but the other person is really angry and emotionally out-of-control, and you're thinking: "This looks like 'road rage,' I've got to get out of here!" A moment later, he moves his hand to grab you. In the same moment, you gaze inward and outward, your awareness blends with your warrior spirit as it rises spontaneously. You notice time moving in slow motion as you effortlessly deflect the attacking hand to the side, and in the next instant, move past the attacker and out the door to safety.

Embrace Tiger ... Return to Mountain
"Embrace tiger ... return to mountain" is a Tai Chi expression that invokes  the self-image of the inner strength and calmness needed to soothe and embrace the tigers you encounter from time to time.
