July Health Tips
Here are some things you can do for yourself and your family to stay healthy and comfortable during the ‘dog days of summer’:
Stay away from hot foods.
You don’t want to make a hot situation hotter. Things like alcohol, hot chilies, and oily food make you feel hotter because they make your Liver work harder and overheat. Like an over-revved car engine on a hot summer day. Also, ‘rich’ foods, like dairy, can cause problems.
Eat cooling seasonal foods.
Foods like lettuce, celery, and watermelon are particularly good in summer because they also function as a mild diuretic. (Diuretics stimulate urination which help reduce the amount of fluid in the body, which can lower blood pressure.) Other cooling foods are mung beans and lentils, which are good to eat as “dhal” (an East Indian dish made of mung bean and lentils.)
Drink more fluid and stay away from excessively salty foods.
Craving of salt is a sign of weakness in the kidneys. So if you crave salty processed foods, like chips, nuts—anything with added salt—take a closer look at why that’s going on because it implies a weakness in the kidneys.
