Chinese New Year: Year of the Water Snake

image

The Year of the Water Snake is a good time to turn your awareness inward ... to consider what’s going on in your life.

Old pine
starting a New Year…
how many Spring mists?
~ Issa

Typically the tendency is to continue along doing things we’ve become very familiar with over the years. And while the Chinese New Year asks you to look at your personal situation through the symbolic lens of mythology, on the most practical level, it’s a time to consider how to be in sync with the natural flow of energy that deeply affects everyone’s health and well-being.

Energetic Qualities of the Water Snake

The energetic quality of Water is Yin. Yin is a state of awareness where, when you slow down and sink into yourself, you can benefit from the insights that come from being more receptive, sensitive, buoyant.

Energetically, because this is a Yin year, it will be relatively quieter than you’d expect, given how agitated things are these days (economically, ecologically, politically ...). Keep in mind though, while the Snake moves fast when in danger or going after a meal, it prefers to glide softly and slowly through life—resting peacefully as it goes along its way.

Maple Tree in Winter

The Water element aspect of this year means ventures that would readily burn-out in a Fire year, will benefit from the Water Snake’s cooling, quieter energy.

... a time to consider how to be in sync with the natural flow of energy that deeply affects everyone’s health and well-being.

At the same time, this is a year where things—like health issues—can be hidden: submerged beneath the surface, and not easily recognized, making it harder to get a clear reading on what’s going on. But if you do what’s necessary to stay ‘Yin’—receptive; sensitive—you greatly increase your ability to sense and receive the clarity you need.

Water Snake Energy: Pros and Cons

Like every other energy of the Chinese Zodiac, the Water Snake has its pros and cons … strengths and weaknesses … Yin and Yang. Understanding and being sensitive to both possibilities increases the likelihood of making right decisions in the cloudy, less-than-transparent year of the Water Snake.

... the energy is flowing inward … and swimming against the tide can wear you down.

In your business dealings this year, be prepared to look ‘under the carpet’ into those hidden places—the kinds of places where you’d imagine a snake would hide and plan his tactics and strategies. Be guided by the Latin wisdom … Caveat Emptor—Buyer Beware.

The year of the Water Snake is a good time to take up a meditative practice, or pursue other introspective opportunities, because it’s a slower, more inner-focused time. If you have a big plan for this year, be measured about it, because the energy is flowing inward … and swimming against the tide can wear you down.

So with the arrival of the Water Snake … slip into a new skin … and jump in!
