Do I need Textile or Markdown if I have “XHTML” as my field formatting option?

I have the code {exp: textil} in my test_blog_teahouse > permalink template but I’m not sure if it’s being used right. How do I know. AFter I had &, “ and other symbols shouldI see them coming through legibly in View Source? How do I know textile is working.
Try Markdown also and see which one I like better. I downloaded it to desktop > downloads. Install in EE > plugins folder.

Note:
It should be pretty easy. Download the plug-in from the add-ons library. Put that into your plug-ins folder. In all the publish and edit fields where you want to use textile, make sure you have the formatting set to “None”. Then in your template all you do is surround your field tags with {exp:textile}{your_custom_field_here}{/exp:textile}.
That should be it. I think you can also set it up so you don’t have to surround your custom fields with that tag if that would be easier.
