There are many learning opportunities at BIOM that
enable you to draw upon our knowledge, skills, and
experiences - in ways that make you better able to
draw on your own.
Looking at the definition of education: derived from
the Latin word "educere" ("e" = "out" + "ducere," to
lead), you might be surprised to see that it means -
"to bring or draw out," not to "put in," as we
commonly think of the education process.
So in the spirit of education we invite you to:
Ask A Question
Do you have a question about Oriental Medicine, the
meditative martial arts, or any other service we offer
at BIOM? Send us
an email, and we'll try to answer you personally,
or cover your question in an upcoming
article.
Wishing you heath & well-being,
Kitty & Michael

The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum of Its Parts

"A good education is not primarily a process of
adding something to yourself, it's more a way drawing
out and using what's already inside of you."
Education is a passion in my life; a proven
springboard for new opportunities, new possibilities.
I've pursued education to some degrees
in the halls
of academia, and in the dojo; been influenced by minds, past and
present, talking to me in books, and have learned
plenty by rubbing elbows, bumping heads, and
developing the knack for telling the difference
between truth and deception.
And then there came a
time when I realized that I knew something more than
the content of my lessons. Best explained by the
ancient Greek geometrist who said:
"The whole is
greater than the sum of its parts."

Food That Heals

We didn't forget about those of you who weren't able
to attend BIOM's recent Diet & Nutrition: The 5
Element Way workshop.
Here's the "takeout" we wrapped up for you:
The Joy of Learning
We started out with some slow, quiet, and easy
Chi Kung to turn our attention inward; exercises
that promote a strong, healthy digestive system.
We honored our stomachs with a delicious serving of
quinoa with shitake mushrooms; (pronounced
'keen-wa,' this cereal grain is from Peru, and is
closely related to amaranth).
We then learned about 5 Element principles, and
discussed the 5 Element food
groups. We talked about what "balance" means from
a 5 Element perspective, and how to combine foods
to create energetically balanced meals that build an
energetically balanced body.
We analyzed and discussed recipes, emphasizing how
particular foods provide extra health benefits when
eaten at the right time of the year, and became more
familiar with important, unfamiliar, Asian culinary
ingredients.
There was a lot of tasting, sipping, talking, and
laughing.
The Joy of Eating
The day's menu included:
- Quinoa with shitake mushrooms.
- Shrimp in lime broth.
- Marinated ahi tuna.
- Poached lotus root.
- Udon noodles with shitake mushrooms and
spinach.
- Kukicha twig tea (Japanese).
- Sencha tea (Japanese).
- Pear with lime juice.
