Going With The Flow

Reading Essential Zen — a compendium of consciousness-expanding aphorisms — compiled by Kazuaki Tanahashi and David Schneider I came upon a timeless exchange that happened ‘once-upon-a-time’ between two fellows named Zhaozhou and Nanquan.

“What is the way?” / “Ordinary mind is the way.” / “Shall I try for that?” / “If you try you’ll miss it.”

Zen: a way / of seeing / ordinary things / in an extra-ordinary way

In the dojo ... teaching Tai Chi and Aikido… showing ... how to ... ‘go with the flow’ ... the exchange continued:

“How do I use this idea of ‘flow’ to reach my goals?” / “Let the ‘idea’ flow into a ‘feeling.’ / “I think I am feeling it.” / “I feel that you’re thinking it.”

(As I handed him “Essential Zen, opened to the words of Sheng-yen)

“Be soft in your practice. Think of the method as a fine silvery stream, not a raging waterfall. Follow the stream, have faith in its course. It will go its own way, meandering here, trickling there. It will find the grooves, the crack, the crevice. Just follow it. Never let it out of your sight. It will take you.”
