What Do You Do?

I’ve always find it interesting when I meet someone for the first time, and they ask me, “So what do you do?” Interesting, to me, because as soon as I try to answer, I always draw a blank, because I “do” a lot of things.

I understand what my interloctor wants to know; something about me they can relate to, but, “What do you do,” generally means, “What do you do to make money.” And from my point of view, that’s usually the least interesting thing about a person.

I think the better question is, “Who are you?” But that’s equally problematic, because the easy answer that bubbles-up is, “My name is _____.” And if one’s ‘social skills’ are sharp, the interpretation is many, and the answer is, “I’m a doctor;” “I’m a teacher;” I’m a ‘fill in your blank.”

The simple answer is, “I am.” But is that enough of an answer?  It is for me, if, the answer is offered in the Socratic sense of, “Know thyself.”

Are you what you do?  Or, do you do what you do because of who you are?
