The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum of Its Parts
“A good education is not primarily a process of adding something to yourself, it’s more a way drawing out and using what’s already inside of you.”
Education is a main passion in my life; a proven springboard for new opportunities, new possibilities. I’ve pursued education to some degrees in the halls of academia, and in the dojo; been influenced by minds, past and present, talking to me in books, and have learned plenty by rubbing elbows, bumping heads, and developing the knack for telling the difference between truth and deception. And then there came a time when I realized that I knew something more than the content of my lessons. Best explained by the ancient Greek geometrist who said:
“The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
Knowing What You Know
When I understood that the “education” process was knowing how to access, and apply, what I had been taught in school, I began to observe that the “facts” of my education had something “extra” attached to them when they expressed themselves—a knowing that no one had taught me.
It wasn’t what is commonly referred to as “experience,” because I knew how to do certain things professionally that I didn’t have much experience with yet. In a conventional sense, I could describe this “knowing” as becoming conscious of, and familiar with, my natural talent and aptitude.
These are important questions to answer for yourself. Everyone has a unique talent, a natural aptitude, that, when contacted, activates a natural “education” process; bringing to the surface what is innately known, but not easily recognized.
Drilling For Knowledge
This education process reminds me of what it was like when I drilled a well, when I built my house: The water was there, flowing strong and deep beneath the surface. All I needed to do was to use my tools and determination to bring it up to the level where I could use and enjoy it.
After some drilling, water appeared—but it wasn’t ready to drink yet. It was still muddy, and full of sediment. But, after clearing out enough of the muck impeding the flow, the water forced its way up, and became a new “fact in my life.” It’s the same with creating the conditions for your innate “knowing” to flow up, and become a “fact of your life.”
Educating Yourself
In the drilling for water analogy, “sediments” and “muck” represent the
many ideas, attitudes, and self-images you learned and absorbed before you were able to critically evaluate what you were being taught. That “knowing” also needs to be brought back to the surface to be reexamined, and where necessary, disposed of, so your innate wisdom can nourish and enliven, like clean, fresh, water.
At BIOM we specialize in this educational process.
